Become an approved JHSC trainer

To become an approved JHSC training provider:

  1. Submit the Become an Approved Training Provider for JHSCs in New Brunswick application.
  2. WorkSafeNB will provide a basic curriculum. If you choose to update the curriculum you must send to it WorkSafeNB for approval.
  3. Provide WorkSafeNB with the upcoming dates and locations of training. WorkSafeNB will then conduct a review to ensure training objectives are being met

On approval, you’ll be listed as an approved trainer on WorkSafeNB’s website.

FAQs

Trainers require:

  • Credentials proving formal teaching qualifications (Bachelor of education degree, teaching certificate from the Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour, certificate of completion of a Train-the-Trainer course) or equivalency, including two of the following:
    • Knowledge of adult learning principles
    • Teaching or training experience (courses, workshops, conferences, seminars, etc.)
    • Experience volunteering as an adult instructor
  • JHSC competency by virtue of education, training and/or relevant work experience, including two of the following:
    • Completed the New Brunswick JHSC Health and Safety Representative Educational Program
    • Completed a JHSC training course outside New Brunswick
    • Provided JHSC training outside New Brunswick
    • Currently or previously held the position of a JHSC co-chairperson
    • Currently or previously held the position of a health and safety co-ordinator or health and safety representative
    • Currently or previously acted as a health and safety advisor to the JHSC
    • Helped a JHSC develop a JHSC Terms of Reference (TOR)
    • Job shadowed or co-instructed JHSC training
  • Knowledge of applicable New Brunswick health and safety legislation, including one of the following:
    • Completed four WorkSafeNB e-courses (New Brunswick Health and Safety Legislation, Hazard Identification, Assessment, and Control, Incident Reporting and Investigations, and Workplace Inspections)
    • Is an industry subject matter expert
    • Has a recognized health and safety designation (Canadian Registered Safety Professional, Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, Certified Healthcare Safety Professional, etc.)
    • Completed or is working toward a health and safety diploma course (example: UNB’s Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety)
    • Experience teaching New Brunswick compliance standards on health and safety topics (fall protection, tag and lockout, health and safety programs, etc.)
    • Current or previous member of a municipal, provincial or national advisory group of a health and safety professional organization

All JHSC training providers must:

  • Offer workshops in New Brunswick (classroom and blended workshops)
  • Follow the guidelines for virtual instruction (if applicable)
  • Confirm that participants have completed the five e-courses prior to attending the workshop (blended and virtual workshops only)
  • Provide participants with a certificate of completion within 10 days of finishing the course
  • Ask participants to complete a workshop evaluation 
  • Provide WorkSafeNB with workshop evaluations, if requested
  • Keep all JHSC training records 

A WorkSafeNB professional will attend and complete an evaluation of the workshop (in-person or virtually) to ensure that training objectives are met.

The training provider must:

  • Verify participants have completed WorkSafeNB’s five e-courses for the blended/virtual course offerings.
  • Collect workshop evaluations and provide them to WorkSafeNB upon request.
  • Provide participants with a certificate of completion.
  • Submit a copy of the company’s liability insurance to WorkSafeNB annually.
  • Notify WorkSafeNB of any contact information changes or if your company is no longer providing JHSC training.
  • Submit quarterly reports to WorkSafeNB including: 
    • Date of workshop
    • Location of workshop
    • Training type (classroom, blended or virtual)
    • Language of workshop 
    • Number of participants
    • Company name of the participants

Note: These requirements are subject to change.

*A combination of training, facilitating and/or curriculum development may be considered.

You must meet these teaching requirements:

  • Classroom sessions must be offered in New Brunswick.
  • Workshops must have practical exercises.
  • The workshop course length and classroom sizes must follow the limits set by WorkSafeNB.
  • For blended and virtual options, e-courses provided by WorkSafeNB must be completed one day before the classroom/virtual session.

There are three options for providing JHSC training: classroom, blended or virtual. For blended and virtual options, participants must complete five e-courses offered by WorkSafeNB before the classroom/virtual teaching session.

  • Classroom-learning only
    • Minimum of 18 hours (recommended maximum of eight hours per day)
    • Recommended maximum of 25 participants
  • Blended classroom learning
    • Five e-courses offered by WorkSafeNB completed one day before the classroom session
    • Minimum of six hours in class
    • Recommended maximum of 20 participants
  • Virtual learning
    • Five e-courses offered by WorkSafeNB completed prior to the virtual session
    • Minimum of six hours virtual instruction
    • Recommended maximum of 20 participants

Trainers must follow the course objectives and requirements outlined by WorkSafeNB. If applicants choose to make changes to the curriculum, WorkSafeNB must approve these changes.

If you choose to customize your curriculum, please submit all training material to training.formation@ws-ts.nb.ca for approval. Please note that addition of company logos, procedures, policies and forms are not considered curriculum changes.

If you employ three or more employees within New Brunswick, you must provide a WorkSafeNB clearance certificate.

You must provide proof of a minimum of $1,000,000 liability insurance (only required for external training providers).

To maintain your status as an approved JHSC training provider, you must:

  • Notify WorkSafeNB if your contact information changes
  • Submit quarterly reports to WorkSafeNB, including: 
    • Date of workshop
    • Location of workshop
    • Training type (classroom, blended or virtual)
    • Language of workshop 
    • Number of participants
    • Company name of the participants
