Part 1: The Occupational Health and Safety Act & Regulations
- Describe how New Brunswick health and safety legislation helps protect employees
- Explain the internal responsibility system
- Define and describe responsibilities of employees, employers (and the role of supervisors as employers), JHSCs and health and safety representatives
- Recognize key topics covered by New Brunswick OHS legislation
- Safety policy
- H&S program
- New employee orientation
- Right to refuse unsafe work
- Discriminatory action
- Navigate the OHS Act and regulations
- Describe the role of WorkSafeNB health and safety officers in New Brunswick workplaces
- Describe the OHS legislation penalties and the appeals process
Part 2: JHSC Functions
Hazard identification
- Distinguish between the terms “hazard” and “risk”
- Identify different hazard identification methods within an employer’s H&S management system
- Outline steps to address hazards
- Categorize hazards
- Assess hazard risks
- Apply the hierarchy of controls
- Identify the possible JHSC role in hazard identification
Workplace Inspection
- Explain the roles of employers, employees and JHSCs or health and safety representative in the inspection process
- Describe types of workplace inspections
- Prepare for an inspection at your workplace
- Develop or modify inspection checklists for your workplace
- Conduct effective workplace inspections
- Prepare recommendations for corrective action
- Prepare an effective inspection report
Incident reporting and investigation
- Explain the importance of investigating workplace incidents
- Identify terms (accident vs. incident) used in your workplace
- Distinguish between internal reporting and the requirement for reporting to WorkSafeNB
- Describe employer and employee reporting responsibilities
- Possible JHSC role in investigations
- Identify root causes (using one or multiple tools)
- Identify corrective actions to prevent a recurrence
- Document findings of an investigation
- Understand the importance of conducting an incident trend analysis
Part 3: JHSC Effectiveness and JHSC training
- Describe the benefits of effective committees
- Describe the roles of committee members and health and safety representatives
