The Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Commission & Workers’ Compensation Appeals Tribunal Act under review

As part of the mandated five-year review of our governing legislation, WorkSafeNB has proposed key legislative updates aimed at enhancing governance, transparency, and operational efficiency. These updates reflect the organization’s ongoing commitment to delivering a fair, effective, and sustainable system for New Brunswickers.

The proposals include:

  • Modernizing language and structure: Updates to ensure the legislation uses gender-neutral language, addresses translation inconsistencies, and removes outdated provisions for clarity and accessibility.
  • Improving flexibility in appeal decision timelines: Allowing additional time to implement appeal decisions when third-party information is required, ensuring compliance with legislation while maintaining service quality.
  • Expanding investment options: Repealing restrictions on investments in mortgages to provide greater flexibility for maximizing returns while maintaining acceptable risk levels.
  • Streamlining the external auditor appointment process: Allowing WorkSafeNB’s board of directors to appoint the external auditor, enhancing governance and reducing administrative delays.

“These proposals align with WorkSafeNB’s mission to balance the needs of workers, employers, and stakeholders while ensuring accountability, transparency, and sustainability,” said board chairperson Mel Norton.  “Through this review, we’re modernizing our legislation to reflect current practices and better serve New Brunswickers.”

WorkSafeNB welcomes input on these proposals and encourages stakeholders to participate in ongoing discussions. For more information, visit TalkSafeNB.
