News Release WorkSafeNB launches review of Home Modifications Policy

December 30, 2024

WorkSafeNB is inviting public feedback on proposed revisions to its Home Modifications Policy, designed to help injured workers with significant long-term functional impairments in accessing or improving mobility within their homes. The review period will run for 30 days, offering stakeholders an opportunity to shape the future direction of this important benefit.

The policy, grounded in the Workers’ Compensation Act, supports injured workers requiring modifications to their homes to accommodate mobility needs resulting from workplace injuries. Examples include:

  • Installing grab bars
  • Widening doorways and hallways
  • Adding stair or porch lifts, ramps, and railings

Highlights of the Proposed Revisions

The updated policy aims to improve clarity, streamline processes, and better align with modern practices. Key changes include:

  • Expanded guidance on eligible modifications and their scope, ensuring transparency for workers and their families.
  • Clarified processes for budget assessments, ensuring renovations are necessary and cost-effective.

“Our goal is to ensure that workers who need assistance have access to the resources required for functional mobility in their homes,” said WorkSafeNB President and CEO, Tim Petersen. “We welcome feedback from the public, as it is critical to shaping a policy that truly meets the needs of our clients.”
