Since his appointment in 2019, Norton has overseen several transformative initiatives and positive results at WorkSafeNB.
"We’ve seen remarkable progress in our modernization efforts, supported by Mel’s leadership," Petersen said. "With Mel as our Chairperson, New Brunswick achieved the lowest injury frequency in our history—and the lowest in Canada—while also reducing claim costs."
Petersen highlighted the success of the Care Closer to Home model, which was instrumental in these achievements. "This model, which keeps clients near their support networks, has been a key factor in our ability to lower costs and improve outcomes," he continued. "As a result, we’ve reduced the average assessment rate for employers to $1.18, the second lowest in the country."
The financial strength gained from these improvements has also enabled WorkSafeNB to enhance benefits for injured workers, marking a significant milestone in the organization’s commitment to worker well-being.
In addition to his role as board chair, Mel brings decades of experience in law, municipal governance, and community involvement. His dedication to his community and profession has made a lasting impact on the organizations he has served, including WorkSafeNB.
“As we look to the future, WorkSafeNB remains committed to creating safer workplaces and better outcomes for all New Brunswickers,” Flaro said. “With Mel Norton’s continued leadership, we are confident in our ability to achieve these goals and more.”
