News Release New Employee Orientation Guide

September 27, 2024

WorkSafeNB is pleased to release a guide to help employers safely introduce employees to their workplace.

The New Employee Orientation Guide leads employers through eight must-include topics. It also offers a template for preparing and recording each orientation and an example and template for a safe operating procedure, which often accompanies a new employee orientation.

New Brunswick’s Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS) Act requires employers to provide all new employees with health and safety orientation before they begin work.

“It’s the starting point for workplace health and safety, and demonstrates you care about their wellbeing and success” said Tim Petersen, WorkSafeNB president and CEO. “More importantly, it also opens the door for an ongoing conversation on health and safety.”

The guide answers many common questions asked by employers, such as “Who, exactly, is considered a new employee?” And, “What do you mean by ‘before they begin work?’” It also reminds employers that every workplace is different.

“Each workplace has unique hazards and risks,” Petersen said.  “The workplace must adapt the orientation for their needs, and we are proud that this new guide can serve as the foundation to developing safe work practices.”

The guide is available in French and English and complements other resources that support making New Brunswick the safest place to work.
