As the chief medical consultant at WorkSafeNB, my role involves a deep appreciation of how addiction affects our workers and workplaces. During Canadian National Addiction Awareness Week (NAAW), from November 24-30, we're reminded of the severe impact of substance use on individuals and society, which was particularly evident as we have seen the cost of substance use in Canada reach over $49.1 billion in 2020.
The Stigma of Addiction
Stigma remains a significant impediment to seeking help for addiction. NAAW's commitment to destigmatizing addiction empowers us to treat it as a health condition that merits care and understanding, not judgment.
Advancing Learning and Collaboration
Last year, as part of our efforts to improve our awareness of the impact of addictions on workers health, I attended the Issues of Substance conference during NAAW. This initiative brought together experts and stakeholders to exchange knowledge and best practices in substance use treatment and prevention. These discussions are crucial for driving forward scientific and community-based solutions to addiction.
Expanding Our Support Network
In addition to public services provided by the Horizon Health Network and Vitalité Health Network, New Brunswick residents have access to various in-person and online resources. These include:
Family physicians and nurse practitioners play an integral role in the recovery process. They are often the first point of contact for individuals seeking help and can provide referrals to specialized services and support systems.
Insurance Coverage for Treatment
Many individuals have access to private insurance plans that cover a range of addiction treatment services, offering options beyond publicly funded programs. It's important to review individual insurance policies to understand what treatments are covered, which can include outpatient counseling, inpatient rehabilitation programs, and medication-assisted treatment.
A Multi-faceted Approach
We must use all available resources to tackle addiction. This includes leveraging online platforms, accessing care through insurance, and relying on the knowledge and compassion of healthcare providers. Our goal during NAAW and beyond is to provide a comprehensive, inclusive approach to addiction treatment and recovery.
A Call to Action
During NAAW, let's reinforce the message that addiction is a health issue that can be addressed with the proper support and treatment. I urge everyone to make the most of the resources available, engage in informative events like the Issues of Substance conference, and reach out to healthcare providers for support.
In closing, NAAW is a time to strengthen our resolve to support individuals battling addiction, and those who support them. It is an opportunity to connect with resources, share information, and support the journey to recovery. Let's stand together to create a supportive community for all those affected by addiction.
