It’s who we come home to at the end of the day that makes our safety so valuable. The sad truth is that New Brunswickers are still dying from workplaces accidents and diseases - and one death is one too many. Last year, 10 New Brunswick workers died, either as a result of serious injury at the workplace or from fatal diseases, such as silicosis, developed in previous years. And already this year, one New Brunswick worker has died, leaving behind family, friends, a workplace and a community that will miss them.
The devastation of a workplace fatality is far-reaching, impacting families, co-workers, employers and communities.
On April 28th each year, we remember those lives that were needlessly lost by observing a Day of Mourning. On this Day of Mourning, I must point out that this year has been especially difficult. The world is mourning. So many have lost their lives to the corona virus, a virus that unfortunately prevents us from gathering together in person today.
While we won't be participating in community gatherings because of COVID-19, WorkSafeNB urges employers and employees to show their support today by observing a moment of silence and if possible, lowering flags to half-mast.
Your leadership and commitment to safety are vital to ensure every New Brunswicker safely returns to their family each and every day. We have seen this province’s employers and workers go to great lengths this year to provide a safe work environment and we thank you for your continued commitment to driving a safety-first culture and protecting our loved ones.
