WorkSafeNB is investigating a workplace fatality that occurred in Drummond, N.B., on Friday, July 10. At about 2 p.m. a tar truck fell approximately 10 metres (34 feet) into a gravel pit, crushing the truck operator. The worker died from the injuries.
A stop-work order was issued to the employer to ensure the site stays intact until a survey has been completed. The survey will measure slopes of the gravel pit in various areas and help determine soil-bearing capabilities.
“WorkSafeNB staff members have been working diligently on-site throughout the weekend and were still at the worksite as of Monday,” said Beverly Stears, acting director of communications for WorkSafeNB.
WorkSafeNB expresses condolences to the worker’s family and friends.
“This is difficult time for family, friends, employer and co-workers. Our hearts go out to those affected by this tragedy,” Stears said.
WorkSafeNB continues to conduct a thorough investigation of the incident. The investigation helps WorkSafeNB determine how the fatality occurred, how it may have been prevented and whether there were any violations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act or its regulations.
Investigations include interviews with the employer and witnesses, a site assessment, examination of any machinery or equipment, personal protective equipment present, work procedures and whether the worker received adequate training and supervision.
