Fredericton, N.B. – November is violence prevention month. The Nursing Home Workplace Violence Prevention Working Group, a collaboration of the New Brunswick Association of Nursing Homes (NBANH), the New Brunswick Nurses Union (NBNU), WorkSafeNB and the New Brunswick Continuing Care Safety Association (NBCCSA), has developed a Nursing Home Violence Prevention toolkit.
This toolkit represents the first phase of an ongoing initiative by the group to identify, develop and share training and resources to help reduce incidents of violence in nursing homes. It has been distributed to nursing homes in New Brunswick.
“While some nursing home residents have medical conditions that may make it difficult for them to control their impulses or actions, everyone, regardless of the nature of their work, deserves a safe and healthy workplace,” said Marilyn Quinn, NBNU president.
The first phase of the Nursing Home Violence Prevention initiative aims to spread the message that “Violence is NOT part of the job” and encourages the reporting of all violent incidents.
“Nursing home workers have many risks but violence should not be one of them,” said Gerard Adams, president and CEO of WorkSafeNB. “We’re pleased to partner with leading nursing home organizations to help workers understand their rights.”
“Our facilities not only provide medical care, but also serve as a resident’s home,” said Michael Keating, NBANH executive director. “I am delighted with the development of a toolkit for all nursing homes in the province. It supports our sector’s commitment to continual improvement in our services and, in turn, enhances the quality of care to all our residents.”
Future phases will see the addition of tools to the kit and increased training on violence prevention for nursing home workers.
