2010 Stakeholder
Report now online
WorkSafeNB’s
2010 Report to Stakeholders is now available online.
The report presents the stories behind the numbers as
WorkSafeNB worked toward meeting its strategic goals of
safety, balance, return to work, service and staff
satisfaction and engagement.
Highlights include a
reduction in fatalities, a significant decrease in the
duration of lost-time claims, an overall decline in the
percentage of New Brunswickers who agree that workplace
injuries are inevitable, a funding level of 111.5%, and
increases in both staff satisfaction and employee
engagement.

Safe workers means
safer roads
Picture
this: It’s sundown. You’re a road worker cleaning up after a
long day of paving. You’re wearing your safety vest, and are
returning to your truck that flashes its four-ways. A van
strikes you from behind and pins you under a wheel. The
picture ends here, as did the life of an experienced New
Brunswick paver.
Road
repairs are vital to a good quality of living in New
Brunswick. But, to keep our roads safe, road workers must face
dangerous traffic hazards. Over the last decade, the multiple
traffic-related fatalities in our province alone raise a red
flag to promote better safety for road workers. More
In
the Courts
Blair
Caldwell, a linesman for NB Power pleaded guilty June
21 to an offence under Section 232 of the General
Regulation 91-191 under the OHS Act for failing
to wear the appropriate personal protective equipment. He was
fined $300.
Caldwell
was seen on June 9 working approximately 7.5 metres above
ground in a boom truck, without a fall arresting device.
Ask Us
Q:
As an employer
with workers in remote locations, what are my obligations as
far as hand cleaning facilities?

A: Under Subsection 6(2) of General
Regulation 91-191, you must provide your workers with the
opportunity to wash their hands and face, particularly before
eating, and the facility provided should allow for proper
decontamination based on the soiled material to which the
workers may be exposed (for example, if hands can be soiled
with heavy grease or other chemicals, the hand cleaning
facility should be able to adequately remove the
contaminants). As the legislation states below, where
possible, a wash basin with hot and cold running water and
soap should be considered first. More

Joint Health and
Safety Committees (JHSCs) play a critical role in
helping WorkSafeNB toward its vision of “Healthy and
safe workplaces in New Brunswick.” JHSCs are an
important communication link between workers and
management and can help create and maintain a positive
health and safety culture at their workplaces. We’ve
developed a JHSC portal to provide JHSC members with
quicker and easier access to the information they need,
including a JHSC handbook, sample forms of minutes,
agendas and inspection checklists, and a link to the
Occupational Health and Safety Act. You can
access the portal by clicking on the JHSC icon at the
bottom left of our front page, or by clicking here.
