New
training portal will help employers meet employee training
obligations
On January 7, 2013, WorkSafeNB will
introduce a new training portal on our website. The portal is
part of our commitment to raising the bar on health and safety
in New Brunswick.
The portal underlines the
importance, and obligation, of providing workers with
appropriate health and safety training. It will include links
to legislation, including New Brunswick's Occupational
Health and Safety Act and its regulations; a list of
external health and safety training providers; a section on
frequently asked questions about health and safety training;
and, information on our Recognized Training Provider program.
“New Brunswick’s employers need to understand their
legal obligations to train staff on how to work safely,” said
Perley Brewer, manager of client consulting and education
services for WorkSafeNB. “This portal will provide the
resources to help with this training." More.
Attention all health
and safety training providers!
Private sector training providers in New
Brunswick are invited to submit their names to appear on a
Health & Safety Training Providers List which will be
posted January 7, 2013 on the training portal on our website.
To be added to the list, click here.
In
the spring, WorkSafeNB will launch its Recognized Health and
Safety Provider Status program. All those companies who agree
to be audited against our new training standard will be
granted Recognized Provider Status. The provider list will be
broken down into three groups as follows:
Group 1 –
Companies that have applied for and have been audited by
WorkSafeNB and have achieved Recognized Provider
Status.
Group 2 – Companies that have made a formal
application for Recognized Provider Status but are awaiting
their audit by WorkSafeNB (audit pending).
Group 3 –
Any other health and safety provider who wants to be
listed.
Once the Recognized Provider Status program is
launched in the spring of 2013, then names will be added to
Groups 1 and 2 as these companies meet the Recognized Provider
Status criteria. To encourage companies to raise their bar on
health and safety training, WorkSafeNB will only list Groups 1
and 2 as of January 1, 2014.
Worker finds greener
pastures after near fatal workplace injury
It just takes a split-second to change a
life forever. Some might regard that statement as a tired old
cliché, but for Steve Morris it’s not a cliché – it's his
reality.
The split-second that drastically changed his
life occurred on November 18, 2008, when he fell more than 18
feet from a build he was working on to the frozen ground
below.
A roofer for more than 30 years, Morris was
following all the proper safety procedures the day of his
accident. He was wearing his fall arrest, and was standing on
scaffolding before getting on the roof, where he would hook up
his fall restraint, when a board at the back of the
scaffolding let go. More

Us
Q:
We
live about a half-hour out of town (away from my husband's
workplace). He has refused to travel to work when the roads
are bad. Today there were whiteout conditions and although he
attempted to drive to work, he ended up turning around and
coming back home. Can he be fired for not going to work when
the roads are unsafe? He's been told this is a problem. A
co-worker lives near us and travels in to work no matter what
the conditions and he is compared to this co-worker. Please
let us know.

for privacy purposes A: In most
circumstances, the provisions of the Occupational Health
and Safety Act do not apply while employees travel to and
from work and, as a result, we would not likely intervene in
such circumstances. However, there are ways to address this
issue in the workplace. More

DID YOU KNOW
?
If you
typically leave your sunglasses at home in the winter
months, you shouldn't. The sun may seem lower and you
may not see it as often, but the UV rays in December are
just as potent to your eyes as those in July. Wear
lenses that are labelled 98% to 100% UV protection.
Amber lenses block HEV light and newly developed lenses
that incorporate synthetic melanin reduce HEV light
without significant loss in colour
perception.
